Ashtanga Yoga is a prescribed system of postures for the purpose of first cleansing and strengthening the physical body and later purifying the energy body while teaching the practitioner to become fully self aware. Popularized by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and now conserved by Sharath Rangaswamy, this is a powerful system for correcting imbalances, building strength and endurance, and improving flexibility.

The Physical Ashtanga practice, conceived by the remarkable 20th century yogi Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, was handed down to Sri K Pattabhi Jois, who refined the sequence into what is commonly practiced today. However Ashtanga dates back much further, having its roots deeply imbedded in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, a philisophical scripture written roughly 2,500 years ago. It is a flowing practice, with emphasis on the linking of movement with breath, to create tapas (burning heat), to purify and unite body and mind.
